The series follows Lorelai Victoria Gilmore, single mother of Lorelai “Rory” Leigh Gilmore, whom she had at age 16.

After having Rory, Lorelai escapes her controlling mother and father by going to the small (however fictional) town of Stars Hollow, where she becomes a maid for the local inn, Independence Inn. 16 years later, she runs the inn.
